Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

I saw Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and I can say that it is...
   something.

Kris Kristofferson plays a very unkidlike Billy the Kid and James Coburn
is lawman Pat Garrett, out to bring Billy down. Various recognizable
actors appear -- Hal Holbrook, Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, and
most notably Bob Dylan as a semi-henchman of Billy with an odd smile and
the aspect of guy who doesn't really know where he is.

Things happen but the usual cause and effect in movies is missing, and
so are the usual motivations of characters. Everything seems to be
happening in a dream. Coburn as always has a strong presence, but what
he is really after is never really clear.

At one point several of Billy's henchmen walk in on Garrett sitting at a
table in a general store. They chat for a bit, only to have Garrett
suddenly draw a gun. He orders Bob Dylan to walk over to the canned
goods and start reading the labels, which he does through the rest of
the scene. He orders another man to knock out one of his partners, pull
the hat over the eyes of a second, and then drink half a bottle of
whiskey before being shot. Meanwhile, Dylan continues to read "Spinach.
   Beans. Succotash. More spinach..."

People seem to fear death but also unwilling to avoid it, throwing away
their lives with regrets but only the barest reflection or hesitation.

It's not exactly bad, and it has a number of very striking scenes,
especially one when Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is playing. But
it''s not hard to see why the studio was supposedly irate when they saw
the rough cut -- I don't see any way to re-edit it to turn it into a
   coherent movie.
