   Early this year, LACMA opened an exhibit: _Luchita Hurtado: I Live I   
   Die I Will Be Reborn._   
      
   The artist whose first gallery show was in 1974, had her second in   
   2016, and follow-ups at the Hammer (part of _Made In LA_) and London.   
      
      
   The LACMA show, which originated at London’s Serpentine Galleries last   
   year, was given more expansive treatment in its L.A. location,   
   featuring more than 120 works from different eras — including 70 that   
   hadn’t been a part of the London show.   
      
      
   Hurtado had married artists and hung out with others: Wolfgang Paalen   
   and Lee Mullican on the first list, and Rufino Tamayo, Isamu Noguchi   
   and Marcel Duchamp on the second.   
      
   For instance:   
      
   But [first husband] Del Solar introduced her to a world of   
   intellectuals that would shape the course of her life and her career —   
   such as the prominent Mexican painter Tamayo, who became a good friend.   
   The two would gather in her kitchen to paint and talk shop, often   
   choosing colors from their environment and imagining how they would   
   re-create them on canvas.   
      
   “We spent much time together using color as a toy,” she recalled in her   
   conversation at LACMA. “‘How do you mix the color of that skirt?’ And   
   then we’d go at it to see who could do it first.”
