   Onanism, which most people today understand as masturbation, was more   
   than just that. People who study the bible say that is was a form of   
   protest by Onan, who preferred to waste his seed rather than make love   
   to his deceased brother's wife - a custom of the day. "Wanking for   
   effect" would be closer than plain old masturbation.
