   Republicans are generally opposed to marijuana, so they are probably okay with   
   the high taxes on it in order to discourage its use.   
      
   As I understand it, California shot itself in the foot somewhat with regards to   
   legalizing recreational marijuana.  The state and municipalities were quick to   
   jump it on with their own taxes, which can total to 30 - 35% of the base price.   
   The trouble is, California has a long-standing and well-established underground   
   economy revolving around pot.  A lot of people are continuing to purchase on   
   the   
   cheaper black market rather than go to dispensaries.  This also puts the pot   
   growers who supply that market at odds with the ones attempting to go   
   legitimate   
   and comply with all the regulations and inspections, which are funded by those   
   taxes.
