   Now they are. Back in the day, Romans were the citizens of the city of   
   Rome, long before the idea of a united 'Italy' existed. Even to this   
   day, Italians make snide remarks about the cities of origin of people   
   they dislike. ("He's a Neapolitan, you know." is an aspersion most   
   northern Italians know well.)
