There are some extremely pleasant parts of New Jersey, but I concur that
full-service gas stations are insufficient motivation to live there.

Although it's been a few years, every time I visited there was always an
incident with some jerk that reminded me of why I was glad I no longer lived
there. I wanted to say that New Jersey has a higher Asshole Quotient (AQ), but
now I think that it's not significantly higher than other parts of the country.
Rather it's that New Jersey assholes, and indeed, the assholes of large
   portions
of the Northeast with which I am familiar, are a bit more aggressive. In the
West they tend to adopt more passive behaviors.

Some of my favorite memories of New Jersey involve snow, lots of snow. To the
extent you can take your time about dealing with it, it's lovely. Nothing like
waking up and seeing a fresh carpet of snow blanketing everything. Have that
second cup of coffee... no hurry. If you live in town, you'll get to see the
neighbors -- they'll be out, shovelling their walkways too.
