Yes, the unfilled promise of the name "Netflix"...

Content owners are holding back their films for a better deal on streaming
services they have an ownership stake in. Meanwhile, Netflix has spent many
millions of dollars on their own "original content," which is promoted on their
service. The ideal of being able to instantly access nearly any movie or TV
show from the vast body of those works has gone by the wayside. And I agree,
their user interface is aggressively awful.

In its way, Youtube is the model of what Netflix promised to be -- an on-demand
service with nearly *everything*. Of course, there are copyright and ownership
issues, to say the least But when you search for just about anything, you
   will
find it -- or at least a fragment of it. I use Youtube primarily to look for
and explore new (to me) music. I don't try to watch movies or television shows
(apart from clips). I will also look for something that interests me (a dance
troupe, for example) if I think there may be video of it. And occasionally
   I'll
search on something like "Russian dash cam", "kinetic sculptures," or "marble
machines" and watch two or three.
