   Maybe. It is said to be a painting of Lisa Gherardini, but nobody   
   knows for sure.  And I read somewhere that the enigmatic smile is   
   actually showing a swelling of the face due to an abscessed tooth.   
   Others have said Mona Lisa's mysterious smile was caused by an   
   under-active thyroid gland.  Hypothyroidism can cause swollen hands,   
   thinning hair and a lump in the neck, all visible in the portrait,   
   according to researchers.
