   It's not a 'trick'... that's just how it's done for film... because 35mm   
   film is not 16:9 ratio.   
      
   I don't know enough about HD cameras to know how they work, but likely they   
   recorded 16:9 to 'archives', while cropping the outgoing feed before HD.   
      
   MY only question there is how they managed to get the rerun to have the   
   Remote segment fullscreen - it wasn't 4:3 in the little box like when Conan   
   did the 'here's what we looked like before' (still with black bars on top   
   and bottom and then on the sides as well). It was real fullscreen the whole   
   size. That should mean that they actually went back and changed the show   
   because if they saved all the shows in 16:9 and just reaired it, the remote   
   would be in the smaller square with black all around.
