   Nescafe was big in (the) Ukraine.  Big BIG.  Other   
   Merkin brands were acceptable currency, but for some   
   reason Nescafe was the market standard.  Getting a   
   cup of coffee made from actual beans was quite rare.   
   Even upscale restaurants had big urns of hot water   
   and little individual packets of Nescafe.   
      
   I think civilizations can be judged by the quality   
   of their caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.  Ukrainia   
   does quite well in the latter -- that 12% ABW beer   
   saved my life -- but is a cultural wasteland with   
   the exception of espresso.  The USA!!!  USA!!!  USA!!!   
   is finally achieving world dominance, at least in   
   availability.  Your average bozo still farts Maxwell   
   House and Budweiser.
