From: nebusj-@-rpi-.edu               - Carson Daly's Fifth Anniversary Week. What, *still*? They've       had stuff about celebrities wishing him a happy fifth anniversary ever       since I got back from Singapore, although I admit it's hard to tell       because every episode feels like a rerun. I'm not sniping about the       repetitiveness of content (Letterman's opening sketch bits are the       pinnacle of that); I'm just talking about things like the monologue       jokes seem to be a week or two behind the headlines, which when you're       making fun of silly things Britney Spears does makes an episode feel       like a rerun even when it's new. And the opening bit has footage from       Alicia Keys on January 8, 2002. I know you want to have special events       during sweeps, but they should be able to get a Fifth Anniversary on the       correct date to within two percent of the elapsed time. Being six weeks       off is just silly.               I know there's reasonably strong sentiment in these parts       against Carson Daly on the grounds that he's a complete tool. Well,       I won't try to argue that, but despite his unfortunate occupation of       a useful portion of namespace it's not like he's a threat to Conan's       fortunes or anything, and I would hope we don't give in to the fanboy       treatment that not only must Our Guy win but Everybody Else has to       lose, visibly and painfully. So, you know, he does a decent enough       show, and it's amazing he's been around for five years there. And       certainly it's better having him there regularly than it is to have       Later With Whoever Gets The Jury Summons crushing the last happy       memories of Costas's old show.               And, heck, some of the escalator interviews are amusing. But       February 19 is *not* the anniversary of January 8 by any measure.              --        Joseph Nebus       ------------------------------------------------------------------------------              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
