From: nebusj-@-rpi-.edu              Christopher Dodd:        - He's running for President. He has something big for him: his       hair. It used to be flaming red hair, then Bush got into office and it       went white.                - The campaign boggles the mind. It's been going on for fifteen       years, and it's still unspeakably many months away.                - Dodd names Kenny Chesney his vice-presidential candidate.                - He must end up in parts of the country he never imagined. For       example, Harumph, Nevada. There's a firehouse, it's a little different       from Connecticut. There's a billboard advertising the Museum of Brothel       Art. He didn't go.                - He's not leading in the polls, but he likes it. In December       2003 John Kerry was at three percent in the polls; when people pay       attention to the race, they make up their mind. So he's imitating the       John Kerry campaign.                - Last weekend there was the debate for Univision. Dodd wanted       it to be in Spanish. He does speak the language from his Peace Corps       experience. He wasn't allowed to show off at it, though.                - Dodd's father was executive lead counsel for the Nuremberg       Trials. These are the letters he wrote to his wife. Churchill       suggested just summary execution; the Soviets were up for that too.       Supreme Court justice Robert Jackson, prosecutor, said, ``Four great       nations, flush with victory and stung with injury, stayed the hand of       vengeance and voluntarily submitted their captive enemies to the       judgement of the rule of law, which is the most tribute that power ever       paid to reason.'' It was a high point in moral authority for the United       States.                - It's the basis for worldwide institutions, and the       significance is relevant. Should we be associated with Nuremberg or       with Guantanamo and Abu Grahib?                - Conan wonders if it was more morally clear back then. Facts       are different, but we have a false choice -- the notion that if you want       to be more secure you have to give up rights. There's no way to make us       less secure.                - Think where we were six years ago tonight. We're in tough       shape. We have to stand for justice and principle.                - There are some very personal moments in his parents' letters.       How would his father feel? Probably he wouldn't have loved the idea of       publishing his letters. But on first reading them Dodd was amazed by       ``who is this guy talking to my mother?'' and it was his father ... he's       one of six children, so they had something more than just these letters.                            Kenny Chesney:        - 'Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates': Never Wanted Nothing More              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
