|    1 October 2007 - Ken Burns, VHS Or Beta    |

From: nebusj-@-rpi-.edu              Ken Burns:        - So Conan already has The War on DVD?                + I would really like PBS to stop telling us ``The War is       brought to you by $_sponsor''. The sentence would be less creepy if it       were reworded: ``This Ken Burns documentary, `The War', was brought to       you by $_sponsor''.               + I had the same problem a few months back when History Channel       did a three-hour thing on the Spanish-American War complete with dopey       reality-TV interludes, and their commercial outros claimed ``The       Spanish-American War was brought to you by Mastercard'' (or whoever),       since it would be more correct to say it was brought to us by the San       Francisco Examiner.                - The director's cut of The Interview is much longer and more       expensive.                - World War II is the most-discussed war and there's four or       five cable channels entirely about it, including the Hitler Channel on       Disney; how can he approach it? He tried endless anecdotes from the       trenches.                - Veterans have only started telling their experiences of the       war. Before the 50s you just didn't talk about being turned into       professional killers with their dearest friends killed and wounded.       Many of them had never told their children.                - Many of them find, 60-plus years away, the war is still very       close and immediate.                - World War II saw a huge common purpose that we haven't got       today. The notion of shared sacrifice making us richer was present back       then. He attempts to claim that the War On Terror is as big as the War       On Fascism, but there was no attempt to call for civic participation,       and that is part of the problem. Burns has a vague idea that action in       2001 could have ended dependence on foreign oil or improved       infrastructure.                - What's his reward? It's a drop in a pond; what radiates out       is more important. He doesn't want people to regret not asking their       dads what he failed to ask his dad.                - You can record answers and send it to the Library of Congress       where it will be stored forever.                - Oh, it's on DVD from today. That's how Conan has it.                     VHS Or Beta:        - Bring On The Comets: Can't Believe A Single Word, maybe?              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
