You missed the vicious wisecrack about Sarah Palin's daughter. It went
   something like this:

"Last night was a huge night in the news. Sarah Palin introduced herself
to the country at the Republican convention.... And during her speech...
Sarah Palin spoke proudly about being a hockey mom.... It's unknown what
positions her kids play, but one of them isn't very good at protecting the
   crease."

For me this was the laugh-out-loud joke of the night, but at the same time
I felt moral qualms about it. I think Bristol Palin (Sarah's 17-year-old
daughter, the subject of the joke) is different from celebrity performers
such as Jamie-Lynn Spears who willingly put themselves under the media
spotlight, thus becoming fair game for public criticism of their missteps.
Although Bristol Palin presumably gave her mother the go-ahead to run for
vice president, I doubt that she was ready for the national media firestorm
that was to come, and I don't think she, at age 17, deserves to have her
private life picked through and savaged. Conan softened the delivery of the
joke somewhat by not mentioning the daughter by name, but I still think
this one went over the line.

Nevertheless, I like it when Late Night pushes the boundaries of decorum.
The occasional shot of piquancy makes the show worth watching.

   > Convention.

Triumph is the epitome of the risqué, boundary-pushing humor I was talking
about. Political conventions are ideal targets for satire, and Triumph
(i.e., Smigel) was really in his element here. But who'd have thought he'd
   go gaga for Sarah Palin?

   ...(snipped)...

They played a 1980s commercial starring Connolly and Seth Green for the
Matchbox Super Spin Car Wash. I actually had one of these which I used to
clean and polish my collection of die-cast metal cars, one after another,
over and over, until they were not only immaculate, but they even had a
thick coat of wax on them. I guess it was the ideal gadget for a boy with a
   neat streak.

I recognized Connolly as the son from the show "Unhappily Ever After,"
which was sort of a "Married with Children" with a dog puppet.

   > Adele:
   > 19: Crazy for You.

She has the pipes, but that song was a bit outré for me.
