|    26 December 2008 - rerun - Jim Carrey, I    |
|    29 Dec 08 23:46:44    |
From: nebusj-@-rpi-.edu               This was rerun on 26 December 2006, and that time itself was       a rerun from 20 December 2005. I think that, at three years from the       original airing to the rerun, this makes this the longest-ago-rerun       Late Night's done.                      Anyway, my thoughts from when this aired, and internal evidence       suggests from 2006 rather than 2005, which is a lot different from how       I write these nowadays:              26 December 2006 - Jim Carrey, Isaac Hayes        Hey, they moved the NBC bug! Now if they can just put it       out of TV range.              Conologue:        - The Transit Strike: Hey, that lasted like, what, 12       minutes?        - Jessica Simpson: Is she still a celebrity?        - So do you suppose that gingerbread trailer home was       actually made, or was it just cardboard and colored toothpaste?       Or was it entirely a Photoshop job?       Walkover Music:               Winter Wonderland       You know:               I think I reviewed this episode when it was on a year       ago, but I didn't know back then that my alt.* posts weren't       getting through, so I just assumed you all ignored me.       Conan helping out the Transit Strike:               Part of me knows that Conan is acting up in his stage       persona with his silliness in the van and acting as driver and       volunteering to carry Reesa and so on. Part of me also suspects       that he's really just like that, and this is how he'd be taking a       van ride with his old college pals too.               ``Look at that guy in the Segway ... he's from the       future.'' Good, natural, funny Conan. Woman who tries to escape       Conan and ``It's high school all over again'', yeah, that feels       sincere.               I was surprised after saying the guy at the Christmas       Tree place had no immune system and had to stay in the plastic       bubble lest he die that Conan didn't poke his hand in.               Now, if people weren't being allowed to drive in the city       with less than four people in the car (as mentioned in a       Conologue joke), how did Conan drive around? Obviously there was       at least one guy for the camera and maybe another for the       microphone, but either the van got mighty overcrowded or there       was a while Conan was driving illegally. But if he was, I'd have       expected him to make fun of that fact.              Jim Carrey:        Yes, the string dance makes it a clincher. I did review       this last year and the thing was lost to the ages. Well, unless I       saved a copy locally, which I may well have done. Is Moviephone       still around, for that matter? For some reason the Singapore DVD       stores were much more likely to show video from ``Fun with Dick       and Jane'' than from ``King Kong'', though.               I wonder who it is writes interviews that are essentially       extended comic segments like this -- Carrey wasn't really       interviewed, he just did a couple of spot comedy pieces. Is it       the guest's idea, since they're usually people highly regarded as       comics like Jim Carrey or Steve Martin, or is it the writers       overachieving?              Horny manatee:        Oh, they're changing bumpers from last year.              Jim Carrey, Part II:        Why is Jim Carrey doing the Vulcan Neck Pinch? Well,       yeah, he set up the bit, but I was expecting a reference. The       bit about him being everything was genially odd; doing a heavy       metal ``Silent Night'' was a bit too far a forced wacky for my       tastes.              Isaac Hayes:        There is an air of coolness which attaches to anyone       attempting with sincerity to play the theme from Shaft, and even       people as inherently cool as the Max Weinbert 7 or Isaac Hayes       and his band gain from it. You could have the Vienna       Philharmonic play it and they would have soul. I believe       similarly that everyone fantasizes about having a version of       Shaft rewritten to star them. It's a shame we didn't get to se       Conan's face during the song; he has to have been giddy to the       point of explosion.              Closing Bumper:        Irwin Allen's Land of the Giants? Cool.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
