Except that the rerun from the night before (with Alan Alda and Billy Joel)
was even older, having originally aired 1 December 2005.

Indeed it was a singular performance, though a bit strange to watch this
time around because Hayes died in August of a stroke. Your ode to the theme
from "Shaft" is a fine tribute to the man who helped us all get our groove
on -- well, a little bit at least. I doubt the Wiener Phil is going to
change their New Year's program to include a soul number in place of one of
those Strauss waltzes, nor would I want them to, but your point is well taken.

Anyone remember the X-Files episode in which a drugged Mulder wakes up
singing the "Shaft" theme? I can't help but think of that scene whenever I
   hear the song.
