|    Fallon's first Late Night (Conan cameo)    |

From: nebusj-@-rpi-.edu               Well, Conan didn't pop up on Letterman, although I'd be quite       surprised if he didn't appear there a couple times in non-guest roles       before taking over The Tonight Show. But he did have the cold open       spot for Jimmy Fallon's Late Night, as the guy hanging around and not       quite done moving out and well aware that Leno wasn't leaving *his*       offices in Los Angeles ...               Also it revealed that the weird bug-eyed Conan bumper had a       counterpart as a real portrait-type picture.               As for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon itself as seen in studio       6-B, where it's incorrectly housed, up to the point that I had to get       to sleep:               Well, it hasn't made me love Jimmy Fallon. The various bits       seemed all right and I suppose if I already felt warmly towards Fallon       I'd have enjoyed them better. I could see how the pretaped comedy bits       (giving the cold open a pass on needing to be particularly funny since       it's enough to be cute and passing-the-torch in tone) of 'Target       Demographics' and 'Lick For Ten' should be amusing in a we're-too-silly-       for-this way, but they didn't feel quite off-kilter enough for me. In       particular 'Lick For Ten' --- three people are brought from the audience       to lick items (a lawn mower, a printer, and a goldfish bowl) for ten       dollars --- never felt quirky enough for my tastes, not least because it       was terribly clear the supposed audience members were actors and they       didn't play quite enough to acting like they were in enough on the gag       or completely out of it.               If there's a specific problem I'd say that it's that I haven't       really got an idea what Jimmy Fallon's comic persona is. It's vaguely       genial and a touch playful though not so much as Conan's is, and with       no strong attitude at its comic core the bits feel generic. Even the       opening credits bit --- multiple pans of Fallon running around --- and       logo (just the name of the show in Helvetica) could be dropped into       any talk show without change. That can develop, certainly, and I hope       for him and his dependents that it does; for now, well, he's new and I       can certainly give him some time.              --        Joseph Nebus       ------------------------------------------------------------------------------              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
