   "Spanglish"

Tea Leoni would like to tell us about "Spanglish," her new movie
co-starring Adam Sandler and directed by the legendary James L. Brooks.

"But it's not done yet," she says. "I guess Jim always works like this.
   He always cuts it close."

   That's for sure.

"Spanglish" is due in theaters a month from today, on Dec. 17,
but Brooks is still fiddling in the editing studio.

Last Friday, in fact, Leoni was speeding down an L.A. freeway -
"at very high miles per hour," she said - juggling coffee, her iPod,
a cellphone and the steering wheel, on the way to Brooks's studio
   for some additional voice looping.

Most of the interview was a running commentary on the drive,
which always seemed precariously close to disaster.

"Whoa! Yellow line!" she said at one point.

Brooks's last-minute style probably makes his producers as nervous
as Leoni's driving would. But you can't argue with his track record.
"Spanglish" is only Brooks' fifth movie as a director, but, wow,
   those first four were good.

   "Terms of Endearment" won five Oscars, including Best Picture;
"Broadcast News" got seven Oscar nominations; and "As Good as It Gets"
bagged two Oscars, for Best Actor and Best Actress.
