What did you mean by "more or less final instrumental mixes"? It's clear
from the different panning that the instrumental WOIIFTM tracks on Lumpy
Money and the vocal versions on the original album were mixed down to
stereo independently of each other. The vocal versions can't have been
built on the stereo instrumental versions.

But that doesn't mean that FZ ever intended these instrumental versions
   for release as such.

When you ask why, do you mean

   a) Why are the MOFO and Lumpy Money instrumental tracks named
   differently?

   or

   b) Why did FZ prepare stereo instrumental versions of the WOIIFTM tracks
   at all? ?

As to a), I haven't yet compared the MOFO instrumentals to their vocal
counterparts as carefully as I have with WOIIFTM (or if I did it was a
long time ago and I don't have my notes at hand). But the term "basic
tracks" suggests that these ARE what the vocals (and possibly some
   instrumental parts) were overdubbed onto.

As to b), I think the recording process for WOIIFTM happened over a
longer period of time than that for Freak Out! If during that period of
time FZ wanted to listen to his work in process--or play it for anyone
else--outside the recording studio, he would have to mix it down to
   stereo.

Or maybe he was intending to overdub vocals onto these stereo
instrumental versions, but then he decided to do new stereo instrumental
mixes and overdub the vocals on those.

If you really want to know why, you'll need a ouija board or a time
   machine.
