   I'm really surprised that everybody seems to have forgotten H L Mencken,   
   who made a comment or two that seem like a perfect fit to the times we   
   live in:   
      
   The first is applicable on both sides of the pond:   
      
      The only good bureaucrat is one with a pistol at his head.   
      Put it in his hand and it's good-bye to the Bill of Rights.   
      
   At least right now, the second applies more to the pond's left side:   
      
      On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach   
      their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a   
      downright moron.   
      
   And finally, this one seems like a good match with the female Caligula   
   currently occupying No 10 Downing Street.   
      
      Laws are no longer made by a rational process of public discussion;   
      they are made by a process of blackmail and intimidation, and they   
      are executed in the same manner.
