This       has a lot to do with the rise of Jeremy Corbin: his popularity has been       helped a lot by his performance during the run up to this week's election.              The chief difference from the US situation is that there are no Trump       equivalents, i.e. complete Westminster outsiders, sticking their heads       over the parapet. A UK Trump is probably impossible because the PM isn't       directly elected. Instead the process is:              - We elect Members of Parliament using a first-past-the post system        in 750 odd electorates, all of roughly the same size.              - The party with the most seats selects one of themselves to be the        Prime Minister, though this person is usually the party leader        going into the election, so everybody knows who that will be as soon        as the election results are announced.              - The PM in turn gets the nod from the Queen to form a Government              - The PM and the senior party members then decide who will fill the        cabinet seats and run the various ministries. Again, we generally        know who these are likely to be because if the last Government        is returned the cabinet will be much the same as last time, and, if        an opposition party wins their Shadow Cabinet members will probably        form the new Cabinet.                     --       martin@ | Martin Gregorie       gregorie. | Essex, UK       org |              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
