   While you could create a stand-alone NNTP server, the power of NNTP   
   came from peering arrangements. That is, messages posted by clients of   
   your server would be forwarded to other servers, they'd forward to   
   others, etc.   
      
   The trick is the "peering arrangement"... Critter.net used to be   
   peered so that alt.fan.furry from it was the same alt.fan.furry from   
   Giganews, or from XYZ...   
      
   Critter is no longer peered (the uplink wanted too much money for a   
   free server, as I recall) and as a result alt.fan.furry has multiple   
   personality disorder. This post came in via Earthlink (Giganews   
   contracted service). Someone just using critter.net as a news server   
   won't see this post -- and any posts to alt.fan.furry using critter   
   won't be seen here. I don't know how many other servers in the "furnet"   
   are still active.
