   can it do things like melt the ice caps? i suppose so. i dont know why   
   you would do that. the heat can be used for industrial processes such as   
   desalination of seawater into clean drinking water, smelt steel, recycle   
   glass and aluminum, refine ore, power automated manufacturing, make   
   paper, stained glass, synthetic petroleum and plastic, and a great many   
   other things, mostly without first converting the laser beam into   
   electrical energy.   
      
   For many of the same reasons, rather than use steam to power turbines   
   and electric generators, steam can be used directly to do work, for   
   example, to power hydraulic pistons, to heat and cool components, to   
   clean air and water for cleanrooms, and a bunch of other things.
