I've seen something along these lines to happen with jabber.ru
somewhat recently. They have, however, since restored their
    conference service.

There seem to at least be furry at conference.jabber.org and
furry at conference.jabber.ru, though the latter is for some
reason hidden. (And is reportedly predominantly Russian-speaking.)

That said, I don't feel that XMPP allows for the amount of
anonymity comparable to netnews (especially when posting via
Mixmaster.) That's great for job-related activities, or even
for weeding out abuse off volunteer-driven technical support
conferences, but for pretty much anything else, I'd rather
prefer a Tor-accessible IRC service instead. (Although I guess
IRC will need a tweak or two for this to work really well.)
