Google Groups search function is lousy, though, so it only worked about
   halfway. Eventually I found some
posts I made in alt.tv.animaniacs and I found the E-mail address I was posting
from at the time. Based on that I was able to search backwards until I found
   this post.

online I had to dial a terminal server at my local university, then connect
from there to a UNIX system at another university, and from there to
"Cybernet" which was a free BBS that
had Usenet access. From there I started reading Usenet and made my first post
about a subject I was passionate about.

Sounds pretty difficult but also cool once you could get onto Usenet.
^_^ Do you know if it worked via UUCP back then? (found an amateur radio
project on github recently, somebody made a set of software to use your
soundcard as an UUCP modem, heh)
