   The pawn is, in the words of Siegbert Tarrasch, "the soul of chess".

   It is the piece in the front rank, of which eight are present, that
   moves as follows:

   it normally moves one step forwards;

   its first move may be two steps forwards;

   to capture, it can only move one step diagonally (replacing the man
   that it captures);

   if a pawn would be moving to a square where an opposing pawn could
   capture it if it moved one step forwards, then, if it moves two steps
   forwards instead, the opposing pawn can still - but only on the very
   next move - capture it by moving into the square that first pawn
   passed through.
