   Reagan withheld funding for aids research and was supported by his far   
   right constituents, who viewed aids as a 'cleansing mechanism', or the   
   just deserves of the immoral gays. That was twenty years ago.   
      
   Today the far right wants to institute a new constitutional amendment to   
   guarantee that gays are kept from legally committed relationships.   
      
   If the right wanted to reduce gay promiscuity, hence reducing the spread   
   of aids, they would be the ones wanting to extend marriage to all   
   people, not to disallow it or withhold it from gays by interjecting this   
   social engineering amendment into out constitution.   
      
   Liberals did damage the attempts to contain aids by objecting to public   
   health involvement in tracing infection. Probably tens of thousands of   
   lives were lost in order to protect the anonymity of gays and   
   inadvertently some of those who were spreading it. Of course the article   
   didn't mention this, the only valid argument to support your claim.
