Excellent points. Although I enjoy the recent films, I think you
nailed their second biggest weakness. (The biggest, in my opinion, is
the overuse of Mothra and Ghidrah.)

   >usually fairly current on the Godzilla films, but this one was the most
   >recently made G film that I've been able to see. My congratulations to those
   >who were able to get a Japanese subtitled print for the show. That was a real
   >touch of class, and the picture and colors were sharp and vibrant. I will
   >definitely be there in two weeks for GMK.

   >All that said, I have to get the following off my chest. This film really
   >wasn't all that great. And it's for the same reason that just about every
   >kaiju film since 1984 has failed by: there's only so much interest I can
   >invest in films that are told from the military's perspective. I really wish
   >Toho would get out of this rut, because they've worn this story out to death.
   >
   >Go back to the '60s and '70s and see the variety of perspectives they were
   able
   >to present:
   >
   >G vs. King Kong: an enteprenuer tries to steal King Kong for profit, and a
   >dash of the military interferes (Somewhat repeated in G Vs. Mothra)
   >
   >Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster: a police detective tries to figure out why
   a
   >princess is spouting prophecies about the current rash of monster appearances.
   >No military, but a bit of government work
   >
   >G Vs. Sea Monster: a guy trying to find his lost brother gets caught up in
   >monster appearances and some big conspiracies.
   >
   >Son of G: A group conducting weather experiments deals with monster
   >appearances
   >
   >G's Revenge: a meddling brat copes with life by dreaming of monster
   >appearances
   >
   >G Vs. Smog Monster: a shrill brat learns lessons about pollution, with some
   >minor help from the military
   >
   >G Vs. Megalon: an inventor and his... friends (?) happen to have built a
   robot
   >to deal with the current monster appearances. The military gets a few scenes,
   >but not many.
   >
   >G Vs. Gigan: a comics artist (!) gets caught up in an alien plot involving
   >monster appearances. Again the military has a role, but it's largely
   faceless.
   >
   >And so on. Granted, most of the films of this wave included the military in
   >some fashion. But they usually weren't the focus of the entire film. Yes,
   >some of these scenarios were very goofy. But at least there was some courage
   >from the studio to try different things.
   >
   >Now guess which '90s film I'm talking about here:
   >
   >G Vs. _____: Godzilla appears and the military must figure out how to stop
   >him.
   >
   >Again and again and again. With help, no less, from a psychic girl (the same
   >one repeatedly) and G-Force, and the Super X, and the Super X2, and the Super
   >X3, and so on.
   >
   >Now with the newest wave, I've seen Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus,
   >and that record is playing over and over and over.
   >
   >Toho, please! Some new writers. Some new scenarios. Some fresh ideas.
   >You've made the same film eight times now. Make a new one!
   >
   >OK, I'm done. Thanks for listening.
