I have seen things like this, too. Usenet is usually unmoderated, so
those who feel better about themselves hurting other people (or trying to)
have an easier time. And, probably groups like A Course in Miracles, the
so-called "spiritual" groups are easier. A few years back I saw someone (for
whatever personal hatred of the world, or maybe jealously) try and ruin
someone's home business, the person had a website for and had built up for
years. She used to post outright lies and terrible stuff in the subject line
with the person's full name so this would come up in searches. People who
might be wanting to do business with her. Also, writing to people listed on
the website as reference and saying terrible things- lies. For the purpose
of doing the person with the business the most harm.
I think if I were starting out now, online, I probably wouldn't be as
open as I have been. When I first got a computer people said "be careful,
there are a lot of nuts on the internet". I didn't know what they meant, and
didn't think I would be around where they might be LOL At the time someone
had sent a mail bomb to a young boy's home (he had gotten mad over some kind
of botched deal or sale online). The bomb blew up, killing the kid's mother,
badly wounding the kid and destroying their home. The man (in another state)
had sent it UPS with his name and return address on it, so he was, of
course, arrested and sent to jail for life.
I've had some lies written about me, and threats made, and probably
should just shut up and go away. I always feel it's clear I'm writing what I
honestly think, feel and believe. For some reason this sometimes pisses
people off. Or maybe they are just lookng for something to be pissed off
about and someone to vent on.
On the other hand, I've gotten into some good communication and learned
a lot in a positive way. Instant communication around the world! I'm still
fascinated by it and believe in the potensial for good.
