XPost: alt.magick, rec.arts.sf.written, alt.religion.druid       XPost: alt.magic.secrets       From: bleablah@mume.invalid              It happens that David Dalton formulated :       > I recently read The Magicians by Lev Grossman. It is about       > a young stage magician and fantasy fan and math prodigy who       > gets accepted to a school for real magic. It pokes some       > fun at tales such as Narnia and Harry Potter but it is not       > for children, it is darker and has a fair bit of sex and       > violence. But I enjoyed it and may buy the sequel       > The Magician King when I get a chance.              I saw your post and read the book.              > Have any of you read The Magicians and if so what did you       > think?              Grossman has much JKR and Lewis inside him. The Magician is what I call       a cityscape fantasy and Quentin Coldwater is a Dirty Harry (Potter) on       the streets of NYC. :-Z              For me, it was depressing but that is what Grossman wanted.              It's the problem people have when you look at Harry Potter as the       journey of a soul instead of a cultural artifact. Coldwater/Magician       lacks depth, it's an entertainment read only.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
