   Those with severe, hereditary problems were merely sterilized. These   
   unlucky people know that their problems made them suffer. They should   
   not want to bring more suffering into the world. And they could adopt   
   children.   
      
   Hitler's euthanasia-decree was issued at the time of the outbreak of   
   the war for the purpose of increasing the availability of hospital   
   beds and medical personnel to deal with war-wounded. The   
   euthanasia-decree was in no way a eugenic measure and was not   
   comparable or related to eugenic sterilization. Eugenic sterilization   
   in National-Socialist Germany was a much larger concern than   
   euthanasia. Hundreds of thousands were sterilized in Germany beginning   
   in 1934. By contrast, in the period 1939-1941 only about 71,000 were   
   euthanized before the decree was withdrawn.   
      
   The actual euthanasia document signed by Hitler:   
      
   "Berlin, 1 September 1939   
   "Reichsleiter Bouhler and Dr. med. Brandt are instructed to broaden   
   the powers of physicians designated by name, who will decide whether   
   those who have-as far as can be humanly determined-incurable illnesses   
   can, after the most careful evaluation, be granted a mercy death."
