Well, I was led to believe in the heat of the moment that I was doing
something illegal, which is why I took that much crap before he spit
   on me.

Again, the signs read, "WALK BIKE ACROSS BRIDGE."

What does mean? I found out much later when I asked a cop. "It means
that you should not ride your bike on the sidewalk across bridge."
Hey, the sidewalk is 2 feet wide, and that would be pretty stupid to
do anyway. So the guy is playing vigilante and blasts the horn at me
repeatedly and I gave him the finger. He stops and claims that he was
trying to save me, so he plays the good guy. The guy is much stronger
than me and tries to get off the car and give me a beating or worse. I
try to defuse the conflict and he spits in my face before leaving.

Who do I blame? The idiot who wrote the sign, which cites a "city
ordinance." For them pedestrians and cyclists are an accident in the
design. Not welcome by any means. Right in that spot --an affluent
city-- they put the pedestrians to walk through the mud and have now
put a second sign warning them of danger ahead. They have placed
"sharrows" (bike painted on lane) further down but you still must
negotiate this "no man's land." And this is through the most scenic
   spot in town.

The guy who spit in my face deserved to die anyway, but I didn't
deserve to spend 10 years in prison for it.
