Let's not forget to mention Ami, who is a friend of the caretaker of
the park. ("Ami the plot device. . . .")

He might sense some special power within Rei, and be intrigued
by that -- or else he's just insanely chivalrous, and doesn't want
to make waves when she seems so determined.

The earliest connection would be their seiyuu -- Furuya Tohru had
been the voice of Kasuga Kyosuke, and Tomizawa Michie had
been the voice of Kasuga Manami, in "Kimagure Orange Road."

(Sibling affection rules: in the most dedicated Manami episode,
Kyosuke "dates" his nearsighted sister Manami, but pretends
he is some random dude on the street in order to give her the
feeling of escape from housework; and she, being unable to
see him, acts as though she doesn't catch on to who he is.)
