   You're still thinking in American terms.  In the Japanese system, the   
   high school you go to is the most important part.  It determines the   
   college you will go to, which in turn has a major effect on your job   
   opportunities.  Grades and scores are largely irrelevant; all that   
   matters is that you graduated from a particular school.  She'll have a   
   much better chance at med school and being a doctor if she goes to a   
   good high school.   
      
   The only reason most people would ever go to a school below their   
   capability is if they absolutely could not handle the stress of the   
   entrance examinations.
