   Actually, according to Takahashi herself, he *is* supposed to be   
   reasonably good-looking if it weren't for the thick-lensed glasses which   
   he needs in order to see. One of the minor things underlying the whole   
   Umino/Naru subplot, I expect, even if that was invented entirely for the   
   anime.
