Ah, finally, a bit of backstory.

The Silver Millenium. Source of endless speculation. But what do we
really know? As of right now, very, very little.

Serenity was princess of a kingdom on the moon, while Endymion was
prince of the Earth. The two were clearly in love, and Serenity gave
   Endymion the musical locket.

According to Luna, an evil spirit overtook the Earth, and then invaded
the Moon, coming after the Crystal.

Queen Serenity sends her daughter and her guardians forward in time so
they can live peacefully, at least until Beryl starts getting restless
   again.

And well, that’s pretty much it, to this point. I’ll try to keep notes
what’s actually presented in terms of ancient history.

Both Beryl and Metallia are interested in Endymion.

While clearly this is an Usagi episode, Rei’s actions are an interesting
   study too.

As Usagi starts to give up on it all, Rei slaps her. As Usagi starts to
yell at her, she realizes that Rei is crying too. She actually liked
Mamoru before all this started, and she too, idolized Tuxedo Kamen.
She’s lost just as much as Usagi, and a lot of it, she won’t be getting
back. A lesser person could have easily been selfish and just given up,
but she’s still doing her duty, and giving Usagi the strength to do
hers, as she will pretty much for the rest of the series.

The death of Zoisite, a surprisingly moving end for a rather irritating
character. Kunzite was genuinely upset by it all. I’ll be sure to pay
attention to Kunzite’s behavior. It might be worth a closer look.

It’s a real change from the sneaking, lying Zoisite to Kunzite, who’s
clearly more powerful, and more willing to go head on with a foe,
instead of trying to backstab his way to victory.

What, did Venus think the others were going to make her go first alone?
She seemed genuinely touched that Jupiter stepped up with her. Then
again, she’s very used to doing it all alone.
