   Not sure why this would cause an uproar. Death was a common theme even in   
   anime for younger children. In the 80's they killed off Minky Momo with a   
   truck(!) and that series was aimed at a younger audience. I suspect that the   
   "uproar" was one of those stories that get started at conventions while   
   waiting on line for the dealer room to open. There's always some "expert"   
   with  a loud voice (like the one at Katsucon that started the one about   
   Megumi Hayashibara marrying her 16 y.o. cousin.  Blehhh!
