I could be wrong, but in the first broadcast of thje series in Japan they
did use the original ending where they all die (Usagi's last thought is of
being a normal girl again). Traditionally, Magical Girl series last only 1
seasoin, they start with the pet (toy, spirit, etc.) granting them magic
powers (magic wands, magic ribbons, whatever), they fight the villian (help
their friends) and then lose their power or die at the end of the season*.
In the second airing of the first season they changed the ending to have the
senshi awaken or be re-born or whatever. I am sure they were already in
production for R, but they still ended the first series as originally
   intended,

Anyway, thats the way I heard it!

   * Except for poor Minky MoMo who got hit by the truck and didnt even make it
to the end of the series. Bummer
