Any dictionary you look in, whether English-Japanese or
Japanese-Japanese, should tell you that "tsukikage" means "moonlight"
and not "moonshade" -- "moonshade" doesn't even make any sense because
the moon doesn't have any shade unless there's an eclipse.

"tsukikage" is a very old word; the examples in the Koujien listed for
it come from the Genji Monogatari and the Kokinshu, which are 900-1000
AD works. Even then it meant moonlight. You have the expression in
modern Japanese "tsukikage sayaka na yoru" which means a beautiful
   moonlit night.

This usage of "kage" to mean "light shed by an object" can be seen in
other compounds too -- "hokage", for instance, means the light of a
fire, not the shadows made by the light. And in fact, if you look up
"kage" in the Koujien, the first definition given is "hi, tsuki,
tomobi no hikari" (the light from the sun, moon, or a lamp).
