|    200 Days of Sailor Moon - Episode 106    |

From: chriskern99@gmail.com              Episode 106 - Bonds of fate! The day far for Uranus              This is one of my favorite episodes of the season. It's a really       important episode not only in filling in the backstory of Haruka and       Michiru, but also fleshing out their characters. This shows us more       about why they behave the way they do, and why they seem unwilling to       work with the rest of the senshi. They don't really know about the       Classic and R struggles, so what they see in the sailor senshi is sort       of half-hearted warriors that don't understand the mission U&N have       been given.              Unfortunately, the dub ran into a heap of trouble here. I'm almost       certain that whoever made the decision to make Amara and Michelle       cousins did not know about this episode. But once they reached here       they were presented with basically an intractable problem -- how do       you write dialogue for this episode that suggests Amara and Michelle       are related? Whoever did the scriptwriting for this one made a       valiant effort, and I'm not sure I could have done much better given       the circumstance, but this is the kind of thing that happens when you       have localizers that aren't looking at the product as a whole when       they make their decisions.              Usually VKLL's subs are pretty good but there were a few mistakes in       this episode; I don't know if Pioneer did any better. First, when Ami       is "reassuring" Usagi the subs had her saying that she'll do fine as       long as she can pass some exams -- what she actually said was "You'll       be fine, because there are high schools where anybody can pass the       exams" (this is true; there are technical schools and the like where       the exams are so easy and the pass level so low that even the worst       students can get in).              Second, the subs have Haruka saying that she just cared about running,       until she met Michiru. What she actually says is "If I just hadn't       met Michiru..." which I think has a different implication. Finally,       the expression "shuudan wo erabanai" literally means "I don't choose       the methods," which is how the subs render it. But the more idiomatic       meaning of the phrase is "I'll do anything (in pursuit of some goal)",       with a decidedly negative implication.              -Chris              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
