   I have a theory about that. The senshi's friends generally only show   
   up when they are the target of the day. In the previous seasons, that   
   was OK because neither the senshi nor their friends (with certain   
   exceptions) had the treasure the villains were seeking.   
      
   This season, we already know (or strongly suspect) that all the senshi   
   indeed have true star seeds, so they can not be targeted until the   
   end. Likewise, their friends can not be targeted because to not have a   
   true star seed indicates a flaw within that person's character. And if   
   they do have a true star seed, they will die once it is removed. It is   
   better to leave us in the dark about that aspect and we can be left to   
   assume that the senshi's friends are the sort of people who would also   
   have true star seeds and they don't have to die to prove it.   
      
   Thus, only complete strangers can be targeted until it all comes out   
   in the end.

   A progressive viewing would work if you proceeded backwards and looked   
   for the first appearance of a character (which would actually be the   
   last). However, that would not be much fun.
