   For those who can be bothered with such nonsense, for any franchise "canon"   
   simply comes in various levels of "officialness". Lucas' company approves   
   the official novels, etc., so they do fit into the list at the appropriately   
   high level, basically something like:   
      
    - the movies (including the Ewoks ones)   
    - the various animated TV shows   
    - computer & video games   
    - reference books   
    - the novels / comic books   
    - fan fiction / movies   
    - unofficial merchandise   
    - TV appearances on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street   
    - everything else ever made   
    - the AWFUL Holiday Special   
      
   The Holiday Special is treated along the same lines as Star Trek's   
   "Enterprise" TV show ... utter garbage and completely irrelevant. :-)

   I haven't read many of them, so can't really answer this one ... although   
   the Heir to the Empire series are generally considered to be some of the   
   best, so you might be out of luck reading any of them.
