   Both are true ;-)   
      
   Many newsreaders do actually format the text as /italics/, *boldface*   
   and _underline_ -- regardless of the old tradition to use underlining   
   to denote italics on typewriters (and in handwriting, too, I believe).   
      
   I use slashes and underlines interchangeably to denote italics -- just   
   to keep things confusing ;-)
