   So he does -- I had completely overlooked that, thank you!   
      
   In that case, I can't really see that there is any rational   
   justification of the goblin's reaction to Thorin's presence after   
   Tolkien invented the larger Dwarf history for /The Lord of the Rings/,   
   but it fits with what I have said about the imperfect naturalisation of   
   /The Hobbit/ to the larger legendarium and with what we know about   
   Tolkien's willingness to let incongruous elements from an earlier   
   conceptualisation remain in the story if he found that they improved   
   the story (while at the same time being ready to introduce both small   
   and large changes to a published story -- he wasn't exactly consistent   
   in his own approach either ;).
