      The problem which has been discussed on these groups is that there are   
   3600 seconds in one hour.  That means that if he takes one stride per second   
   he will cover 70000 strides in just under 20 hours.  It is more reasonable   
   to assume that he walked that day for about ten hours, in which case he must   
   have taken two strides per second.  For someone with such long strides that   
   is pretty high frequency walking.   
      The best story-internal explanation is imhoe that Treebeard used an   
   ent-stride as a linear measure as measured at a leisurely walking-pace.  If   
   he was in a hurry (for an ent) and took much longer strides he would not   
   count them, but use his established name for "mileage".
