   I don't even think that is fair. To be sure the films leave out a lot,   
   and some of the changes were not the changes I would have made, but I   
   think the films stand quite well on their own as a version of the story   
   Tolkien told.   
      
   Some of the changes made absolutely no sense in the context of the book   
   (the Elves at Helm's Deep is one spectacular example) but within the   
   movie they worked just fine.

   Most smart kids are not especially mature, and maybe that's the issue.   
   LotR requires not just brains to read it, but also at least some
