The point I was making was concerning the latter part -- that Tolkien
made "several emendations dealing with the /palantír/ and what Gandalf
knew about it." and the association of these emendations to the 1967
second printing (of the second edition) to the text of the palantíri
   essay in UT.

The point I made was that while the ideas expressed in the essay may
not have been present in the first edition text, they are certainly
present and informing the text that we normally see today (I know that
there are some first editions still in circulation -- even a number of
the Ace paperback seem to have survived the long decades since their
release, but the vast majority are now reading at least the second
   edition text).
