   I sometimes suspect that the knowledge that the destruction of the   
   One Ring would mean the immediate downfall of Sauron only came into   
   the book later.  If Frodo knew this when he departed the Company   
   for Mordor, it is not mentioned in the books.  My hunch is that   
   Gandalf may have learned about this during his "converstion" to   
   Gandalf the White.

   The One Ring was a double trap.  Sauron made it for trapping the   
   Elves, and it served to trap Sauron.  Sauron may very well not   
   have known.
