   At the Council of Elrond, after Elrond mentions his belief that the   
   destruction of the One Ring would also cause the failure of the   
   Three, Glorfindel then says "Yet all the Elves are willing to endure   
   this chance, if by it the power of Sauron may be broken and the fear   
   of his dominion be taken away for ever."   
      
   Which does at least seem to be equating the destruction of the One   
   Ring with the downfall of Sauron.
