But as Bill stated: Sauron knew the features if his ring very well, and
all the wise agreed in the fact that he would be utterly destroyed,
remaining 'a shadow of malice' in case of the destruction of the ring.
In one point you may be right: after the downfall of Numenor it took him
a lot of time to 'create a new bodily existence'. Before he might not
have known what it feels like to be stripped off his body, so he might
have thought that his reduced power and the loss of his form had been
causd by the destruction of the ring, mainly because his 'senses' had
been affected as well, so he could not feel the presence of the ring.
But after regaining strength I guess he certainly knew what was going on.
BTW: How could Sauron be definitely defeated without having the ring? :-)
